The RAND 36-Item Health Survey 1.0 (RAND-36) is a brief questionnaire that has been well validated in the social science and medical literature, and is being used extensively around the world as a tool for assessing clinically relevant patient outcomes.

The outcome measurement tool measures eight health concepts in both adolescents and adults:

• Physical functioning
• Bodily pain
• Role limitations due to physical health problems
• Role limitations due to personal or emotional problems
• General mental health
• Social functioning
• Energy/fatigue
• General health perceptions

The RAND-36 also includes a single item that provides an indication of perceived change in health. The tool includes the same items as those in the SF-36 and the MOS-36, however it features a more simplified scoring process.

The RAND-36 was designed as a general outcomes measure to be used in all settings that provide primary or mental health care services. As such, it captures aspects of both physical and emotional health. The tool is effectively used in clinical practice and research, health policy evaluations, and general population surveys.

The assessment takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes to complete and can be self-administered by persons 14 years of age and older or administered by a trained interviewer in person or by telephone.
